The focus of the Kindergarten programme at Aldwych is to prepare children emotionally, socially and intellectually for school and in particular for the challenge of our Primary programme. In the first two years (KG1 and KG2) progress is assessed according to seven key areas of learning:
- Communication and language
- Physical development
- Personal, social and emotional development
- Understanding the world
- Expressive arts and design
Teachers lead children in a mixture of games, guided play and focused activities helping them reach clearly defined developmental goals in each of these areas. Progress is assessed through regular day to day observation.
In the third year (KG3), the focus on English and Chinese literacy and Mathematics increases to provide a solid foundation for primary school and children start working on small projects.
Each kindergarten classroom has an outdoor section so that learning activities can take place both indoors and outdoors. The first five years of childhood have been identified as instrumental in language development, a time when our brains can seamlessly assimilate an extra language. The programme at Aldwych aims to take advantage of that opportunity and give children the best possible start.
